This is a guided tour that combines nature and history in the area of the Helsinki University’s Tvärminne Zoological Station. Here, the sea, forest, and war history meet. During the tour, we will explore a Soviet defense installation that was completed in 1940-41, when the Soviet Union leased the Hanko area after the Winter War. The installation is one of the best preserved in the entire area, with visible gun positions for 45 mm cannons and a fire control tower that still stands.
The walk follows a short and beautiful nature trail by the sea, where the unique nature tells its own story. The guide will point out lichens, hazel bushes, and the old trees that thrive in the mild coastal climate, while also telling you about the Soviet soldiers who once built, guarded, and lived here.
After the nature trail, we continue to one of the six firing positions that the Soviet troops built around Hanko for their heavy railway guns. At the site, you will get an impression of the mighty construction and hear how the three 12-inch guns could rotate 360 degrees to monitor the entire coast.
